Data-driven Governance via Karma

Hi everyone! I’m Kathleen from Karma.

I’d like to give you a brief overview of what we’re doing and open up a conversation on whether this might be useful for 1inch governance.

Karma launched a year ago, aimed to provide DAOs with increased insight into their contributor base. Since then, we’ve worked with a diverse range of DAOs and evolved into a versatile product suite for data-driven DAO governance, tackling issues like low voter participation and accountability.

At its core, Karma tracks and evaluates governance contributions from various on- and off-chain sources, including voting, submitting proposals and forum activity. Leveraging the insights gained, Karma facilitates concrete governance actions such as delegation, permissions, rewarding contributors or allocation of voting power.

A few notable implementations are:

We would like to build a dashboard for 1inch DAO to provide visibility into active contributors of the DAO. The dashboard will serve multiple purposes:

  1. Display governance stats about delegates and other contributors,
  2. Help token holders to find active delegates and delegate their tokens to them,
  3. Reward active contributors in the future.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Happy to chat!

Hey Kathleen,

I’ve worked with Karma to help them get involved in Optimism and Element Finance, but I don’t think 1inch is in the correct state to get the most out of the Karma platform if it comes at a cost. Currently, there are only a few delegates, and it is easy to identify them by a quick scan of the forum and snapshot.

1INCH DAO wouldn’t be able to get much value of the dashboard in the current state, but once there are more community participants and delegates, then it will be more valuable. Regardless, what price are you looking for with this dashboard?

Hi Bobby,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The dashboard used to be good to gain visibility into delegates and help token holders delegate tokens to the suitable candidate. We have now added lot more features:

-Onboarding flow: New delegates can join and nominate themselves
-Delegates can login with their wallet and manage all their info (statement, interests, social handles)
-Verify forum and twitter handles
-With their nomination so everyone knows not to delegate to them anymore

Basically, the product now works really well for DAOs who are just getting started as well.

To answer your question regarding the cost, we can charge a $10k for setup maintenance for 6 months and if the DAO finds value in it, we can discuss next steps then. Let me know your thoughts.

Cool updates, its becoming a whole external delegate profile right?

On showkarma, people can delegate, track their delegates votes and analyse their voting patterns to decide on a delegate, correct?

If you could share a few screen shots of these new workflows, it would be helpful to paint an image for the broader community on how they would integrate. If it helps reduce the obstacles in becoming a delegate, identifying someone to delegate your voting power too and keep track, then I think $10k is a suitable amount!

Per @Bobby_StableLab’s request https://gov.1inch.io/discussion/9764-datadriven-governance-via-karma?comment=51019, sharing some of the updates we made to our delegate dashboards here.

The goal with all these updates is to make it really easy for contributors to become delegates, for token holders to identify and delegate their voting power to a suitable candidate and keep track of their activity.

**Onboarding Flow: **

As a new or existing delegate, you can simply login with your wallet and add/update your delegate pitch and your skills.

**Withdraw nomination: **

As a delegate, you might eventually decide to take a step back from the DAO. Until now, there was no way to indicate that you are not involved in the DAO and request token holders to not delegate to you. With this new feature, you can withdraw your nomination so no one can delegate their tokens to you through our dashboard.

**Inactive delegates: **

We have started marking delegates who have very voting percentage below 20% in the last 6 months as inactive. Token holders can still ignore this indicator and delegate if they choose to. We believe providing additional data will help token holders choose the right delegate.

**Link social handles: **

We have made it really easy as a delegate to seamlessly link your twitter and forum handles in one place.

We are adding a lot more features to the dashboard to improve DAO governance.

Is there any update here on how you guys want to move forward?

**Title: **[1RC] Delegate dashboard for 1inch DAO

Summary

Karma would like to implement a custom delegate dashboard that can be used by the 1inch DAO and the community to onboard delegates, get visibility into their activities, hold them accountable, improve voting participation and further decentralize the DAO.

Abstract

Karma will set up the delegate dashboard for contributors to sign up and update their profile. Our team will work with the DAO and index all the systems where delegate activity can be tracked. This will include Snapshot, CommonWealth forum, Discord and any other systems that contributors are active in. The aggregated stats will be updated on a daily basis and displayed in the dashboard for the community to monitor. Token holders can utilize this information to find the right candidate to delegate their voting power to.

Motivation

Effective governance in a DAO requires a diverse group of governance participants, each bringing their unique perspectives and expertise to the table. To ensure that all voices are heard, it’s crucial to remove any friction that may discourage potential delegates from signing up to participate.

At the same time, token holders need guidance in choosing the right delegates to represent their interests. Once elected, delegates have a duty to act in the best interests of the DAO, and transparency is key to building trust and accountability within the community. By providing visibility into their activities and decision-making processes, delegates can earn the trust of the token holders they serve.

To help delegates improve their participation and overall governance, it’s essential to track and analyze key metrics. This data can be used to identify areas of improvement and optimize decision-making processes, ultimately leading to better outcomes for the DAO.

At Karma, we understand the importance of these issues and have developed a dashboard that addresses them head-on. Our platform streamlines the delegate sign-up process, provides guidance for token holders, and offers detailed metrics and insights to help delegates improve their performance. With Karma, we believe that effective governance in a DAO is not just possible, but within reach.

Specification

The implementation of the dashboard involves 3 steps which are explained below.

1) Indexing Contributions
Karma will index 1inch DAOs sources relevant to DAO governance contributions. These can include (but are not limited to):

  • Snapshot voting
  • Snapshot delegation
  • Commonwealth Forum
  • Discord

b) Contribution Scoring (optional)
For a simplified review of governance activity and possible follow-up actions (e.g. allocation of voting power), Karma aggregates different contribution data and calculates scores for each delegate.

An example of the scoring model used by Gitcoin can be found here: https://github.com/show-karma/reputation-scores/blob/main/src/score/gitcoin-health-score.provider.ts

Final scoring results can be seen here: Gitcoin DAO Contributors Leaderboard

Note: As governance contributions vary from DAO to DAO and have different significance in them, the scoring will be customized in close coordination with the 1inch team. The scoring logic is open source so that anyone can audit and verify the scores at all times. The aggregated data is exposed through APIs and can be freely integrated with other applications as needed.

c) Insights and Delegation on custom Contribution Dashboard
A custom branded dashboard (hosted on 1inch DAO’s subdomain) will be set up to display delegate stats.

Features of the custom dashboard include:

  • Delegate onboarding flow
  • Ability to link social handles (Twitter, Forum, Discord Handle)
  • Update delegation pitch and interests
  • Display Voting stats, history and voting reasons for each proposal
  • Display Forum stats
  • Contribution Scores (optionally)
  • Integration with Snapshot delegation
  • Ability for token holders to delegate directly from the dashboard
  • In Depth insights about delegates
  • Auto tag inactive delegates

Example: Optimism Delegation Dashboard

Rationale

We are confident the seamless onboarding and deep insights we provide about the contributors will help attract more contributors, strengthen governance and ultimately help the DAO grow.

Considerations

The cost for implementing and managing the dashboard will be $15k for one year.
Our team has experience building large scale applications in the blockchain ecosystem for many years. We have already implemented dashboards for a number of DAOs. You can find all the custom delegate dashboard we have built at https://www.karmahq.xyz/daos.
